Christians Were Sure At Pentecost
Christian men and women knew that they were filled with the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. That day made a difference in their lives. Something happened that was different from the preceding days of tarrying.
Suddenly they heard a sound like the rushing of a violent wind. At first it seemed to be above them. Then it came closer and grew louder until the roar filled the whole building. These men were aware of something unusual — as aware as we are when a jet plane takes off while we duck our heads and put our hands over our ears.
On the Day of Pentecost men saw as well as heard something out of the ordinary. Each one saw something like flames of fire resting on the heads of his brethren. From the amazed glances turned in his direction, each knew that a similar flame rested on himself. And was there the added confirmation of a tingling sensation like fire running through the veins? A fire that consumed carnality, thrilled the soul, and exhilarated the body? It must have been so.
They were all filled with the Holy Ghost and they knew it — knew it because they were conscious of a power in them that was more than their own. They began to glorify God in languages that were not known to them.
And is God a respecter of persons that He should make himself known at Pentecost but conceal himself at present? The testimony of experience shouts a glad No. Many of us can join in the radiant witness:
Oh, I never shall forget how the fire fell, How the fire fell, how the fire fell! Oh, I never shall forget how the fire fell When the Lord sanctified me!
