Read: John 16:12-15

When he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth (John 16:13).

When He Is Come

For the past several weeks we have been thinking of the steps by which we enter the sanctified life. We are now to consider what God does for us in this experience.

But first, let us pause a moment to reflect that entire sanctification is a work of God. There is a sense in which we ought never to impose our human tests upon this miracle of grace. When we apply tests and our lives do not measure up fully, we are tempted to wonder if we were really sanctified. To wonder is to move in the direction of doubt; to doubt the work of God is to lose our assurance.

Nevertheless, with our eyes wide open to this hazard we go forward confident that God can guide us past the hazard to a wider plain of understanding. We boldly ask, What differences shall I expect in my life as a result of the baptism with the Holy Spirit?

Jesus promised that when the Holy Spirit came He would guide us into all truth — He would make us the kind of persons that God wanted us to be and lead us in all the ways that God wanted us to go. “When he is come,” life grows richer and fuller. We shall examine our spiritual needs to discover how God has planned to help us. We shall listen to the testimonies of those who have been sanctified in order to learn what are the possibilities of this grace. As we listen, our faith will be kindled.
