And when they had prayed… they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness (Acts 4:31).

Courage For Service

Every Christian needs to know something of the experience of these early Spirit-filled men and women. Every Christian needs to discover courage for witnessing — the courage that comes through the work of the Holy Spirit in us.

Uncle Bud Robinson used to tell of holding a meeting in a large church of 788 members. Of these only 8 could be counted on to lead in prayer. One of the 8 was a timid little lady who had to be notified a day in advance if she was to be called on. In the meeting she was sanctified wholly and the next night testified on the street, attracting such a crowd that traffic was blocked!

Sometimes the crisis experience of entire sanctification brings this immediate release from old fears. The Christian at once launches into a life of radiant activity. Because this happens we may think holiness of heart ought automatically to make every Christian a courageous and effective witness immediately. But this is not true.

Courageous Christian service, like maturity in Christian graces, is most often a result of growth after entire sanctification. T. M. Anderson writes: “Sanctification does not rid all persons of a timid and shy spirit. They may be persons who are naturally timid and retiring in disposition. It is constitutional with them, and not moral lack. No seeking at an altar will overcome it. Yet this robber of the saints must be overcome.

Do I want this thief of my spiritual effectiveness conquered? He can be, when I join earnestly in the prayer of these early Christians.

Prayer For Today

And now, Lord… grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word (Acts 4:29).
