Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection (Hebrews 6:1).

Let Us Go On Unto Perfection

God’s Word exhorts us never to rest until we are mature Christians. Such a Christian life starts when we are saved from sin. We move toward its full realization to the extent that we are filled with the Holy Spirit.

It is the nature of spiritual life to create a desire for an ever deeper acquaintance with God. After we have come to know Him in forgiveness there arises a desire for yet more. God has given us this desire to lead us on into entire sanctification and to an ever-deepening life of God in the soul.

Most of the chief branches of the Christian Church believe in sanctification for God’s people, but some reject the teaching of a crisis experience. For them sanctification is simply a process of growing in grace. There are others who believe that we cannot be sanctified until death. Holiness people believe that the Bible teaches an experience of entire sanctification which we may receive here and now as a second definite work of God’s grace.

This experience of entire sanctification is one stage in the process of the Christian life. It is an advanced stage in relation to conversion, but a preliminary preparation in relation to later Christian life and growth. We are here concerned with the advance stage in relation to conversion. In the language of John Wesley, the experience of entire sanctification is a “second blessing properly so called.”

Our text exhorts, “Let us go on unto perfection,” and the Writer affirms, “This we will do, if God permits.” He has no doubt as to God’s willingness but he knows that every spiritual advance depends on divine help.
